HEMALI BHUTA AND SHREYAS KARLE

  • RESIDENCY DATES : Mar 1st 2010 to Apr 30th 2010
  • FROM : India

Hemali Bhuta views her works as an exercise that starts with the dilemma between ‘to be’ and ‘to become’, thus taking an anarchic position of questioning the quest for existence. As a multi-media artist her works exist in two forms- as the object and as the documentation/archive. Her choice of materials itself is a contradiction; they are perishable, impermanent and ephemeral, thus requiring another medium to document and archive the materiality of the work. This allows Bhuta to lay emphasis on the pre and post phases of the work; on the process of production (leading up to the work) and the archival evidence (an after life to the work) which is integral to her practice.

Bhuta (b. 1978) has completed her MVA in Painting from the M.S.University of Baroda and her GD Art from the L.S.Raheja School of Art, Mumbai. She is the recipient of the Nasreen Mohamedi 2008-2009 scholarship.

Multi-mediatic in his practice, Shreya Karle works with formats such as video, sculptural forms, illustrative/narrative book formats, collages, and collaborative community projects. His works are loaded with visual pun, often developed with reference to mundane objects or situations. Absurdity becomes a metaphor which he uses to reflect upon social situations, thus creating an ambience of humour that mocks the ironies of reality. Interactivity is an integral part of his meaning making process, especially with reference to his community/collaborative projects. In an effort to resist labelling he pushes his practice in various directions, constantly camouflaging various ideas within a single work.

Karle (b. 1981) has completed PD in Visual Arts from M.S.University of Baroda, and GD Art from L.S.Raheja School of Arts (Mumbai). He has received the KAVA award from Kashi Art gallery and the Bodhi Art award in 2008.

Hemali Bhuta and Shreyas Karle are the recipients of the FICA Emerging Artist Award 2009, and will be artists-in-residence at the Montalvo Arts Center (Saratoga, California, USA) in March-April 2010.
